Arizona's College and Career Competency Team Training

Pierson Vocational High School is participating The College and Career Competency Team Training (CCCTT) project that is a collaborative professional development initiative lead by the Arizona Department of Education and the University of Kansas, Research Collaboration.  The purpose of this project is to support educators as they more systematically and comprehensively develop students' intrapersonal and interpersonal competencies for increased educational achievement, motivation, and improved post-school outcomes.  
Research has identified teachable, transferable skills that positively impact behavior, academic achievement, graduation rates, and post-school outcome (National Academy of Science, 2012).  Organized into three domains (intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive), the Competency Wheel highlights many competencies that all students need to be socially engaged, career-equipped, and lifelong learners.  

College and Career Competency Glossary

Adaptability: The capacity to alter your thoughts and behaviors in order to effectively respond to uncertainty, new information, or changed circumstances.

Assertiveness: Expressing your beliefs, wants, or feelings in a self-assured and direct manner, while respecting the rights of others.

Creativity: Thinking “outside the box” and coming up with new ways of doing things.

Critical Thinking: Reflecting on an issue using evidence to develop an informed judgment or action.

Conflict Management: Your ability to lessen tensions or resolve problems that arise among individuals or groups.

Curiosity: Your impulse to explore a new idea or seek out a new experience in order to acquire knowledge.

Empathy: Relating to the perspective or feelings of another individual.

Goal Setting: Identifying specific long-term or short-term life or career objectives.

Initiative: Being motivated to act without being told.

Integrity: Behaving in accordance with the principles you believe in; doing “the right thing” when nobody is watching.

Learning Schema: Mentally organizing information in a way that helps you relate content to your own life, interests, and previous knowledge; this helps you remember current information and makes future learning easier.

Networking: Creating and utilizing social ties to gain support and to support others.

Organization: Structuring ideas, tasks, or objects in a logical, efficient, and productive fashion.

Perseverance: Your resilience and commitment to working toward a desired result in the face of challenges or setbacks.

Problem Solving: Identifying and following a series of actions in order to find a solution to a complex issue.

Self-Awareness: Understanding your own strengths, limitations, preferences, and interests.

Self-Efficacy: Perceptions you have about your capability to perform at an expected level and achieve goals.

Self-Regulation: Monitoring and controlling your actions and thoughts to complete a plan or achieve a goal.

Teamwork: Working effectively with others to accomplish a task or goal.

Time Management: Completing a task or series of tasks efficiently; your ability to prioritize, schedule, and complete your work.
